Obtaining a Work and Study Visa with English Schools in Malta
Not everyone needs a visa to study English in Malta and Gozo. EU nationals do not need a VISA to study English in Malta and Gozo.
When is a visa needed?
- Non-EU nationals may need a VISA before entering Malta, depending on the nationality;
- Some nationalities may enter the country for 90 days without a VISA, while others must have a VISA prior to arriving in Malta to be granted entry. Here’s a list of countries which require a VISA before arriving in Malta: https://identitymalta.com/who-requires-a-visa/;
- EU nationals are not required to possess a return ticket or show sufficient funds when coming to Malta, while non-EU nationals will need to.
How to apply for a VISA to work and study English in Malta
At BELS we provide assistance to all students requiring an entry VISA to study English in Malta and Gozo.
To be granted a visa you will need to state the purpose of the visit, how you will arrive to Malta, how you will finance yourself, and a place of residence. You are required to:
- Provide all the essential details about your visit to Malta on the VISA application;
- Include a passport valid for at least 3 months, two passport-sized photographs, paid VISA fee;
- Indicate the purpose of your stay;
- Applications are usually reviewed within 7-15 days. Here’s a list of Maltese embassies and representations.
Working and Studying English in Malta
Students who are third country nationals can now work for a maximum of 20 hours per week while they study English in Malta and Gozo. Here’s the procedure to apply for a VISA to work and study English in Malta and Gozo:
- Students will first be given a student Visa;
- Students need to be in Malta for at least 3 months before applying for a work and study visa. Students can work after their 90th day in Malta;
- Thereafter, they can apply for a visa to work and study English in Malta and Gozo;
- The student would need to find an employer by himself/herself. If requested, BELS can put student in contact with a work agency;
- A fee will be applied;
- The employer will fill in a specific form confirming that they will employ the student. This form will be added to the student’s visa application to work and study English in Malta and Gozo;
- The student can only work up to 20 hours per week and must maintain a class attendance of at least 80% for a valid visa to work and study English in Malta and Gozo. Attendance will be checked daily;
- No conversion of courses is possible. The student needs to attend lessons daily to make up a minimum 15 hours of tuition per week (General English Standard Course);
- If accommodation is not booked via BELS, the student will still be required to show proof of the agreement with the accommodation owner and make sure that this accommodation is licensed by the Malta Tourism Authority. It is highly recommended that all students book accommodation provided by the school to ensure ease of process and assurance.
To work full-time, students must:
- Have a residence permit;
- Have an employment license;
- Be in their second year of residing in Malta.
